The Magic Gardens Project Trust
The object of the Trust is to advance the education of the residents of Larkman and surrounding areas, particularly but not exclusively in matters relating to organic gardening and the natural environment.”
The Magic Gardens Project works primarily with children, engaging them with the natural environment thus improving their perceptions relating to health, nutrition and community care, and ultimately helping raise their achievements at school.
Growing food is only the tip of the iceberg when we attempt to value the work of our Project. In the garden we have provided a stimulating environment where children can engage with the natural world and develop a respect for the wildlife around them. We believe that the work we do has a much wider influence than merely what happens within the school garden. We encourage children to extend what they learn with us Into their home lives, thus improving the quality of the environment beyond the school boundaries. We believe that working with us and having fun within the garden instils children with a sense of pride, ownership and belonging which benefits the children, the school, and ultimately the community in which they live. Long term benefits include reductions in; vandalism, anti-social behaviour, litter and general community neglect.

Tel: +44 (0)1603 45 28 17The school has a courtyard garden measuring 50 x 30m and work began in 1999 in the courtyard on a voluntary basis until 2001 when funding became available and the Larkman Magic Garden Charity was set up.
The now independent charity runs garden/nature clubs and cross curriculum activities in the gardens. We would like to contact other schools to share ideas, skills and knowledge.
We have registered the Project and the School as an Eco-School and are working with year 6 to Introduce re-cycling and energy saving measures throughout the whole school, with future plans including developing the school Into a community re-cycling centre.
What is sustainable development?Sustainable development is all about ensuring a better quality of life for everyone now and for generations to follow. A good definition of sustainable development is:
'Development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs'.
To do this, we need to look after our environment, address social issues and ensure we have sound economic development - and we need to do this in an integrated way. Whether at home or in our working lives, it is generally beneficial to look at the broader consequences of our actions. Because we live in such an inter-dependent world, it’s also worth thinking about the impact of our lifestyles on people and the environment in other parts of the world.
